We will explore what it means to create a character’s world and then bring that character to life!

Class: DISCOVERING MOMENT WORK
Age: 14-18
Instructor: Matt Cahoon
Price: $20
Welcome to an introduction to Moment Work. Moment Work is a method created by the Tectonic Theater Project that focuses on developing theatrically poetic moments on stage. Those moments are primarily centered around elements of the stage such as obvious things like costumes, props, and lighting and some less obvious things like tempo, virtuosity, and surprise.

In this workshop we will spend some time evaluating what gives a particular moment dramatic impact. We will then create a series of solo moments, work with partners, and then play with combining moments to create small devised pieces of theatre.

What should you bring to class?
1.     Come to class prepared to discuss a moment you have witnessed as an audience member. Think about the most exciting, moving, breathtaking moment you have seen on stage. Remember, these should be things you’ve seen from the audience perspective and not moments from shows in which you were performing.
2.     Bring an interesting object.  Maybe it is something you have had on your bedside table your whole life or maybe it is something cool you found in the junk drawer in your kitchen. Make sure it is a safe object (no sharp edges, not too heavy) and that it is something that your parents/guardians wouldn’t mind you using in class. Be creative and find an object that you think has a story to tell.
3.     Bring a piece of clothing.  A hat, a scarf, a pair of gloves, a shirt, a necktie, etc. etc. Think about the piece of clothing. How does the fabric move? Does it have a vibrant color? Does the piece have texture?
4.     Bring something that makes light.  A flashlight or cell phone, a booklight or table lamp, anything that makes light (no open flames or lights with associated heat sources please). How can you control the light? Does it dim? Does it flash? Does it change colors? Also, think about a place in your home where you can make it pretty dark even on a sunny day. I have found that beautiful light moments can be made in bathrooms and closets because you can often get those rooms pretty dark. Give that some thought.
5.     Bring something that makes sound.  A musical instrument is an obvious choice, but maybe you want to see what a pot sounds like when you tap it with a spoon. Sound moments are fun to make, but make sure you pick something that won’t distract everyone in your house. Small sounds are often much more exciting on stage than are big ones.
6.     Bring a poem.  You can pick any poem you want or, if you want to, write your own. We are looking for poems that have language that sparks your imagination. If you can, memorize your favorite line from that poem.
7.     Bring your courage.  This is the most important thing. Sometimes when you are in a group of talented and confident moment makers, you can feel like it is hard to use your voice. Here are two things I can tell you if you are feeling at all unsure. First, moments are typically really short so if you don’t want the spotlight you won’t be in it very long. Second, for the vast majority of the moments we create together, you won’t need to speak. The emphasis of Moment Work is “show, don’t tell.”

Matt Cahoon has directed four shows for the Winnipesaukee Playhouse including The Accidental Death of an Anarchist, The Almost True and Truly Remarkable Adventures of Israel Potter, American Patriot, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and Miss Julie.  Matt is one of the co-founders of theatre KAPOW, a Manchester-based ensemble theatre company.  Matt has an MA from Goucher College and his theatre training includes work with Double Edge Theatre Company, SITI Company, the New England Center for Circus Arts, and the Tectonic Theater Project.

Class: 16 BAR CUTS, INTENTIONS, AND NERVES - OH MY!
Age: 14-18
Instructor: Haley Jones
Price: $20
We all know our objectives, through-lines, and intentions…that is until the accompanist starts playing! Then our thoughts shift from our storytelling to all the chaos of the audition room/performance or even worse, we become worried about “sounding good.” How do we channel our nerves and use proper singing technique while still making the song active and intentions clear? In this class we will explore two 16 bar cuts where we focus on creating an acting arc within the limitations of most audition song requirements. Because, when we are lost, finding the root of why we are singing, will always bring us back home.

Haley Jones is an NYC based performer. Her time with the Winnipesaukee Playhouse began as Tracy Lord (High Society) and she appeared mostly recently as Roxie Hart (Chicago) for which she won the NH Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actress. Proud BFA Acting graduate of Otterbein University.
