20 in 2020 - Online Classes!

In 2020, students in the Winnipesaukee Playhouse Education Department will have the opportunity to go online with 20 (PLUS!) professional theatre artists from the Playhouse's usual summer roster. Combined, they possess a nearly overwhelming amount of training and insight in a wide variety of theatrical fields: acting, directing, dance, music, design. And this summer, you will have access to this extraordinary group of teaching artists... without ever leaving your home!

​Class: CREATIVE MOVEMENT
Age: ​5-7
Instructor: ​Becky Gregoire
Price: $20
In this fun and energetic dance class we will explore movement that will spark creativity.  We will have fun mimicking movement we find in the wild outdoors and create our very own dance piece.  The students will have a chance to show me what they know and be creative with some free dance time. Making dance a game is a great way for your student to get moving.  I can’t wait to dance with you.
 
Required Materials:
1 balloon (non helium)
1 box of unopened pasta or a shaker that they create
1 stuffed animal the student would like to dance with

​Becky Gregoire loves teaching dance classes for the Winnipesaukee Playhouse Education Department.  She has been teaching at the summer program for the Education Department for years and has choreographed a few productions.  Ms. Becky started her teaching career at Edgewater Academy of dance in 2001 and is still currently teaching there.  Her experience has lead her to accepting a job at Plymouth State University where she teaches tap.  Ms. Becky currently resides in Laconia with her husband of 12 years and her 11 year old daughter.

Class: INTRODUCTION TO ACTING

Think of your favorite actors; have you noticed that when you see them in different pieces of work you often forget who they are as people? You become so instantly involved in the character’s world. In this class we will discover character development; how to become your character in mind, body, and voice. We will explore what it means to create a character’s world and then bring that character to life! ​

Teghan Marie Kelly is back and ready to workshop! Teghan is a NYC based actress, but as a native to Meredith, Teghan is very thankful to be safely home for the summer! You saw her last as Belle in Beauty and the Beast - An English Panto and before that was Sophie in Mamma Mia. Although she was so looking forward to stealing your hearts as Miss Honey in the upcoming production of Matilda the Musical, she is so thrilled to be joining the Education Team once again for online workshops! “If I can put a smile on your kids’ faces, then I am one happy lady!”

Class: THE ACTOR AND THE TEXT
Age: ​14-18
Instructor: ​Tracey D. Turner

This class will focus on script work. We will delve into techniques to develop character in the context of the logical progress of the play. We will discuss the character analysis that is possible from “table work.”

Tracey D. Turner, SAG/AFTRA, a Carnegie Mellon University alumnus, was named Actress of the Year in 1997 by In Pittsburgh Newsweekly for her portrayal of Prospero in the timespace production of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Other stage credits include Mrs. Prentice in Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner for the Winnipesaukee Playhouse in Meredith, New Hampshire, Minnie Kincaid in Lifting for Kuntu Repertory Theatre, Stella Marr in Racing Demon for Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre, Gertrude in Hamlet and Alcandre in The Illusion for Pittsburgh Theater Laboratory, and Peggy Clark in Blue and Jo Billie Massey in Sassy Mamas for New Horizon Theater. She appeared in Fahrenheit 451, A Lesson Before Dying, and 1984 for Prime Stage Theatre, Ruined and Home for The Entertainment Consortium, and The Voyages of Sinbad and As You Like It for The Steel City Shakespeare Center. She was the Artistic Director of I Dream A World, Inc., a non-profit educational touring company, and was Artist in Residence and Assistant Coordinator of the Friendship Academy after school program. Ms. Turner was a teaching artist at Point Park University, where she appeared in productions of Hamlet, Anton in Show Business, and Halcyon Days. Ms. Turner’s film credits include Lionsgate’s The Last Witch Hunter with Vin Diesel, Wonderboys, and Boys on the Side. She was host of The 5-Star Ethnic Show and Shopping Pittsburgh for Comcast Cable Channel FYI. She has appeared in numerous commercials, industrial and independent films, and billboard campaigns.

Class: EXPLORING PLAYWRITING
Age: ​14-18
Instructor: ​A.J. Ditty
Price: $30 for both sessions
***Students Must Take BOTH Sessions (Mon and Fri) This Week***
In these two, 90-minute sessions we'll dive headfirst into the basics of playwriting: from character creation to story structure, from the crafting of dialogue to the eternal struggle of formatting, we'll give you the tools you need in order to create your very own ten-minute play (or the first ten pages of your first full-length epic of the American stage!)We'll also probably talk about Shakespeare, death, and the thoughts that gnaw at the periphery of your mind. All levels of experience welcome!

A.J. Ditty is an actor/writer/slash-mark enthusiast currently living in Brooklyn. A.J.'s plays include B.B.'s Inferno (The PIT, dir. Tom Costello and Felicia Lobo), Eloise Parker Goes to the Moon (Crashbox Theater's Read. Play. Write. series, dir. Kristin McCarthy Parker), Heart of Duckness (Pipeline Theater Company's Bonfire series, dir. Kevin Hourigan), and "Rubiella: A Ghost Story" (Pipeline's Matchstick series, dir. Felicia Lobo). His play The Bøyg, commissioned by theatre KAPOW, is set to premiere whenever we're allowed to be in a theatre again. He is a proud alumnus of Pipeline Theater Company's PlayLab and of Decent Company, a collective dedicated to the advancement of the theatrical writer/performer. A.J. has acted on the Winnipesaukee stage since 2014, mostly with a British accent, and his play Eloise Parker Goes to the Moon was given a reading on the mainstage directed by Timothy L'Ecuyer. BFA: NYU. ***Students Must Take BOTH Sessions (Wed and Fri) This Week***
Taking advantage of a child’s imagination and love of telling stories, the workshop participants will go through the process of writing a 5-7 minute play together. Students will be asked to put together a costume for their characters from items they already have at home between workshop sessions. During the second day of the workshop, we will focus on character development through use of voice and physical choices. When students see how much fun it is to write and produce a play, you may be an audience to many future backyard original play productions!​

A retired teacher, she has taught all elementary grade levels during her 37 year teaching career. She directed The Jungle Book and Harriet the Spy for the Playhouse Education Department. Patte has also performed in various Playhouse shows and enjoys passing on her passion for drama and performing to children starting out in theatre.​

Class: MASTERING MONOLOGUES
Age: ​12-14
Instructor: ​John-Michael Breen
Price: $20
What makes a strong monologue? Where can I find a strong monologue? Who writes strong monologues? Why do I need a strong monologue? How do I make my monologue stronger? Through the human act of telling a story and emphasis on the unique personality & experience of each individual student, we will examine and question what creates a strong, nuanced, and completely noticeable audition monologue to help you nail that audition for any show, project, or admission process.

John-Michael Breen has been an actor, director, and teaching artist at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse since 2015. His most recent role as Amos Hart in CHICAGO earned him the 2020 NHTA for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical. Other favorite Playhouse credits include RED, Lost In Yonkers, Peter and the Starcatcher, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Rocky Horror Show and The Graduate. In 2017, he co-directed Lord of the Flies for the Education Department. From 2018-2019, he starred as Lonny on the Tenth Anniversary tour of Rock of Ages. He lives in New York City.

Class: DIVING INTO SCENIC DESIGN
Age: ​14-18
Instructor: ​Melissa Shakun
Price: $20
This hour and a half course will discuss Melissa’s career Designing and Art Directing for a variety of Set Design from the Winnipesaukee Playhouse (Chicago, Cabaret, High Society) to NBC’s Saturday Night Live.  We will discuss how Melissa approaches designing scenery from script to the stage.  Also highlighted will be the differences between designing for Theater and Television.

Melissa Shakun has designed scenery for the Winnipesaukee Playhouse for ten consecutive seasons. When she’s not working at the Playhouse, she is designing and art directing for Saturday Night Live. Melissa won an Emmy Award for art directing the NBC Live production of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2018. She has worked on many Broadway shows as well as The Americans, Blindspot, The Jim Gaffigan Show and more.

Class: LIGHTING DESIGN
Age: ​14-18
Instructor: ​Tyson Miller

In this seminar we will explore the process of selecting fixtures and colors based on scenic drawings and renderings. We will examine how math and art intersect on paper and translate onstage. Finally we will discuss how a design becomes realized in technical rehearsals. ​

Tyson Miller graduated from Ohio Northern University with a BFA in international theatre production in 2015. He has designed with the Winnipesaukee Playhouse for the past three seasons, including Avenue Q last year. He has worked in a variety of design areas including professional and academic theatre, nightclubs in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, national music tours with Jim Brickman, and museums including the Edward Kennedy Institute for the US Senate.

Class: THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
Age: ​12-14
Instructor: ​Dan Daly
Price: $20
Point, line, shape, form, color, value, texture, and space: Every piece of visual art is composed of these eight design elements. Using a single sheet of paper, we will learn about and explore these eight concepts through small projects and exercises. No previous art experience is necessary! We will learn about and experience each element individually and by the end will have one beautiful mess on our hands.
Needed supplies: one sheet of white printer paper and drawing implements in a variety of colors.

Dan Daly is a Brooklyn-based scenic designer who has designed at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse since 2009. Previous scenic designs at the Playhouse include Moon over Buffalo, Boeing Boeing, The Rocky Horror Show, … Israel Potter…, and A Year With Frog and Toad (2010 NHTA winner). Dan’s work has been seen at the Under the Radar Festival at The Public, with Third Rail Project’s site-specific play Oasis, Monét X Change’s booth at RuPaul’s DragCon, and at the Barn Arts Collective, where he built an inflatable theater.

Class: IMAGINATION AT PLAY - ACTING FOR BEGINNERS
Age: ​8-11
Instructor: ​Nate Healey

Did you love Improv 101? Then join us as we dig even deeper and take your imagination to the next level! In this course, Nate will introduce students to the fundamentals of acting technique and scene interpretation, inviting them to "make believe" in exciting new ways. Through a series of unique ensemble building exercises, beginner's scene study, and character work, students will learn how to connect with the materials and each other, uncovering just what it means to be an actor.

Nate Healey is thrilled to be teaching at The Winnipesaukee Playhouse this summer! Nate first appeared in The Playhouse's 2019 production of California Suite, and was also seen as Dame Stella in the Christmas Panto Beauty and the Beast. Based out of NYC, Nate holds a BFA in Actor Training from the Hartt School and has appeared in a number of regional productions and tours across the country. Most recently, Nate workshopped an upcoming feature film, alongside cast members of Hamilton and NBC's Chicago PD.
